DAY 3
Where Shipbuilding Meets Nobility
Bakar and Kraljevica are two historically significant towns on the Adriatic coast that preserve a rich maritime heritage and the legacy of the powerful Frankopan family. As part of the themed route "The Routes of the Frankopans", these towns offer a fascinating blend of stories.
Bakar, known for its cultural and historical legacy, was once a stronghold of the noble Frankopan family and home to many shipowners, sailors, and the oldest vocational school in Croatia – the Maritime School of Bakar.
Kraljevica, a former renowned health resort, is home to the Nova Kraljevica Castle – the shared residence of the Zrinski and Frankopan families and the home of Ana Katarina Frankopan. Its maritime and cultural heritage is of immense historical value. Together, Bakar and Kraljevica intertwine stories of nobility, seafaring, and healing, making this region ideal for discovering and experiencing history.
In Bakar, we’ll be greeted by members of the “Bakarska gospoda i kapetani” association, along with a salute from the Bakar City Guard 1848. You’ll taste traditional sailor’s bread – Baškot, the iconic Stara Bakarska vodica (sparkling wine), and the delicious Bakarska torta. We'll stroll through the charming old town and climb to the fortress with a stunning view of the bay.
Did you know the largest tuna ever caught in the bay weighed 306 kg in 1928? You can learn more at the “Nets of Memory” interpretation park and the new Fishing Heritage Museum “O Ribi” located in the Turkish House.
After Bakar, we head to Kraljevica, where a welcome awaits with Frankopan Pelinkovac (herbal liqueur) and local dried figs, all set in the beautiful castle ambiance. The KUD Lanterna Kraljevica folk ensemble and the medieval group Ordo Sancti Viti will deliver an authentic presentation of life in ancient times.
A tour of the castle includes the Kraljevica Visitor and Interpretation Center focusing on the Zrinski and Frankopan families, as well as the Small Museum of Fishing and Shipbuilding, showcasing nearly 300 years of shipbuilding tradition.
Lunch will be served in the magnificent setting of the castle before returning home.
The program can also be offered as a two-day experience, ending with a rich themed dinner in an ambient setting.
